Abstract

The study aims to measure the effectiveness of gamifying an open-source Learning Management System to address the problem of student engagement. A gamified LMS design and implementation were presented that included a rationalization of game elements utilized and how these were integrated together to produce cohesion among them. A prototype for a gami ed LMS and its non-gami ed counterpart was developed using the Moodle LMS and subjected to experimentation. The experiment involved students in a university course, collecting quantitative and qualitative data in the process. The results of the study aim to contribute to empirical evidence to see if a gamified LMS set-up can increase student motivation and engagement and determine its effects on performance and learning experience. The results of the study show that gamification was effective in improving student performance, engagement and motivation. Learning experience was also very positive for students who were subjected to the gamified application.
